Wall-hanging hand-knit in moss-stitch. Where moss lives, often fungi do, too. Yarn ends left loose to mimic the mycelial threads below the surface. All mushrooms were foraged within approximately 10 miles from my home in and around the mountains behind the photos here, or, what I consider to be “my backyard”.
When I moved here 30 years ago, I never could have fathomed the variety of mushrooms that are here. Mushrooms weren’t even in my radar then. This piece could never exist without the dyers far and wide who have come before me and who are currently dyeing with mushrooms now! Each year my knowledge of the forest around me, and my relationship with it, deepens just a little bit more, through the lens of fungal dyes and pigments. Every year unfolds just a little bit different. Who knows what mushrooms will reveal themselves this year, or next? Who knows what colors are yet to come?
