The Fungal Fiber Arts Workshops listed below are just a few of the very many mushroom dye workshops led by members of the IMDI in the USA during the last two decades. These workshops are separate from the International Symposia which are sponsored world-wide by the IFFF. Instructors from the IMDI are invited by local mycological societies, textile arts groups, and community education programs to introduce mushroom dyes, papermaking, and myco-pigments to their interested and enthusiastic constituents.
A fiber arts workshop may last for only a few hours, or up to several days. They are generally planned as an introduction to beginners in the field of fungal dye arts, but all stages of experience are welcomed. Workshops are planned for the time of the year when mushrooms are freshly available in that area, which varies across the USA, as often a part of the educational experience may be a mushroom identification and collecting foray in the woods. All participants return home with many colorful fiber samples, and their own experiment notes – enough learned to continue their own exploration.

The 2nd Annual “Cordova Fungus Festival”, to which I was delighted to be invited to teach a 6 hour workshop about Mushroom Dyes, was organized by a group of amateur mycologists from all walks of life in Cordova, Alaska. They do not have any “formal” mushroom club, just an intense interest and focus on fungi. The US Forest Service offices generously provided space to display mushrooms, and hold workshops (with microscopes to use).
